Das Goetheanum dient als Sitz und Tagungsort der Allgemeinen Anthroposophischen Gesellschaft und der Freien Hochschule für Geisteswissenschaft, vor allem aber als Festspielhaus und Theaterbau. Benannt wurde es nach Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. Nachdem in der Nacht zum 1. Januar 1923 das ebenfalls als Goetheanum bezeichnete Vorgängergebäude durch Brandstiftung zerstört worden war, wurde in den Jahren 1925 bis 1928 der heute bestehende Bau errichtet. Beide Entwürfe stammen von Rudolf Steiner, dem Begründer der Anthroposophie.
Bei dem Betonbau ist der weitgehende Verzicht auf rechte Winkel auffällig. Das stilistisch oft dem Expressionismus zugeordnete monolithisch-organische Bauwerk wirkt skulptural geformt und sollte nach Steiners Vorstellung «das Wesen organischen Gestaltens» zum Ausdruck bringen. Ähnlich wie bei einer Pflanze sollte jeder Teil, jede Form, jede Farbe in innerem Zusammenhang mit dem Ganzen stehen und das Ganze sich durch Metamorphosen ins Einzelne gliedern.
Nicht nur das Goetheanum, sondern auch die umliegenden Gebäude und das Gelände sind teilweise von Rudolf Steiner gestaltet worden. Im Laufe der Jahrzehnte ist eine besondere Art von Parklandschaft entstanden, die Erholung, Nutzung, biologische Vielfalt und Ökologie verbindet. Auf dem Architekturpfad können die verschiedenen Gebäude entdeckt werden. Der spannende Dialog zwischen Natur und Kultur, zwischen Raumnutzung und anthroposophischer Praxis vermittelt eine Atmosphäre, die vor dem Horizont nachhaltigen Denkens und Handelns aktuell und inspirierend wirkt.
