Tucked away in the Pointe de l'Aiguille Nature Reserve near Théoule-sur-Mer lies one of the most mysterious attractions in the Bay of Cannes: the Grotte de Gardanne.
Geologically speaking, it is less of a classic cave and more of a spectacular collapsed vault in the red Estérel rock—a natural rock arch that towers directly over the sea. A charming legend surrounds the grotto: According to the tale, it once served as a hideout for pirates who plied their trade in the Bay of Cannes. This touch of adventure makes the place a particularly atmospheric destination.
The grotto can be reached via beautiful coastal trails through the Estérel’s maquis. A short loop trail from Pointe de l’Aiguille takes about half an hour to an hour round-trip—the paths are steep but easily walkable. Below, the small, idyllic Plage de la Grotte de Gardanne awaits with clear water and views of the Mediterranean Sea and the Îles de Lérins.
