The highest that the Palatinate has to offer - that is the Donnersberg. Located in the triangle of cities between Mainz, Mannheim and Kaiserslautern, the 687-meter-high massif literally towers over its surroundings and has exerted a magical attraction on our ancestors for over 2000 years.
It was the Celts who built one of the largest urban complexes north of the Alps on its ridge. The Celtic rampart and a reconstructed section of the former city wall are imposing witnesses of this time.
The Donnersberg was formed about 300 million years ago from several volcanic mountains that inflated and together formed a large massif. It owes the title of National Geotope to this unique geology.
Today, the highest mountain in the Palatinate is one thing above all: a paradise for outdoor fans and nature lovers.
