Eine Legende berichtet, dass ein kleiner Hirtenjunge mit seiner Mutter auf dem Feld hoch auf dem Felsplateau, auf dem heute die Anlage steht, das Vieh hütete. Während die Mutter in der Mittagshitze in einer Höhle Schlaf suchte, wagte sich das Kind beim Spielen zu nah an die Klippe und fiel die steile Felswand hinunter. Als die Mutter erwachte, fand sie ihr Kind nicht mehr und eilte ins Tal. Dort traf sie ihren Sohn unversehrt an. Er berichtete, er sei von einer Frau aufgefangen worden. Der Vater des Kindes war sich sicher, dass es sich bei jener mysteriösen Frau, die ihm sein Sohn beschrieb, nur um die Erscheinung der Gottesmutter Maria handeln könne. Zum Dank für die Rettung liess er ihr zu Ehren eine Kapelle in der Höhle errichten, in der die Mutter geschlafen hatte. Ein zweites Fallwunder im Jahre 1541 ist historisch verbürgt.


Nach ihrer Übersiedlung aus dem Kloster Beinwil legten die Benediktiner unter Abt Fintan Kieffer am 4. Oktober des Jahres 1648 den Grundstein zur heutigen Klosterkirche. Sie ruht auf einer Geländestufe der letzten Jurafalte, dem Blauen. Hier entfaltet der Jura zum letzten Mal seine ihm eigene Schönheit.


Mariastein, das Heiligtum «Unserer Lieben Frau im Stein», zieht seit Jahrhunderten Pilger aus nah und fern an. Mit ihren Sorgen und Bitten steigen sie hinunter in die Felsengrotte mit dem Gnadenbild.  Seit rund 25 Jahren sind unter den Pilgern  Menschen aus aller Welt, viele von ihnen Immigranten (Tamilen, Inder, Portugiesen, Albaner, usw.), auch Muslime und Hindus. Sie alle fühlen sich geborgen in der Stille der Gnadenkapelle und spüren ihren guten Geist. Besonders während der ruhigen Stunden in Randzeiten wird man von der lichten Stimmung umfangen und tief berührt. Gegenüber dem Eingang ist der Fels leicht nach innen gewölbt, wo auf Kopfhöhe ein Kreuz zu sehen ist. Wer sich dort hinstellt, fühlt sich von einer unsichtbaren Aura des Mitgefühls gegenüber allen leidenden Wesen umhüllt.


Höhlen und Grotten sind Kultstätten der Erdgöttin oder Mutter Erde. Deshalb spüren die Besucherinnen und Besucher oft die Gegenwart einer als mitfühlend, barmherzig und weiblich empfundener Kraft.
