From the Backofenfelsen you have an impressive view over Freital-Hainsberg, the Weißeritz valley between Tharandt and Freital and the ascent to the eastern Erzgebirge.
The Backofenfelsen towers above the Weißeritz valley floor in Freital-Hainsberg by around 50 meters. The exposed steep slope shows an outcrop of the Rotliegend sedimentary series. From its plateau, there is an impressive view over the Weißeritz valley between Tharandt and Freital and the ascent to the lower East Erzgebirge.
The rock of the Backofenfelsen is a reddish-brown to grey-colored, medium to coarse-grained conglomerate consisting of almost 75% phyllite and up to 20% gneiss boulders. The rock material originates from the weathering debris of the Variscan mountains. In some places, up to two meters thick slate clays are intercalated, which have been heavily weathered out and form oven-like layered caves. The red coloration of the rocks is caused by the iron oxides goethite and hematite and indicates formation on the land surface under tropical-subtropical climatic conditions.
