Chutze
Dieser Ausdruck, der in den Kartenblättern recht häufig anzutreffen ist, hat weder mit einer Eule (berndeutsch: «e Chuz») noch mit dem gleichen Dialekt Ausdruck für ungekämmtes, wirres Haar etwas gemeinsam. Als Chutze bezeichnete man einen weithin sichtbaren Ort, von dem aus früher Alarmsignale weitergegeben wurden. Über das angrenzende Gebiet des Alten Bern gab es im 17. Jh. 156 solche Hochwachten. Darauf standen dreiecksförmige, pyramidenartige, mit Brennholz bestückte Holzgerüste. War Gefahr im Anzug, zündete der Wächter unverzüglich den ihm anvertrauten Holzstoss an. Drei Stunden nach dem Alarm auf dem Münsterturm in Bern brannten von Kaiserstuhl am Rhein bis Bex an der Rhone und von Ste-Croix im Jura bis Gadmen am Sustenpass die Warnfeuer und riefen die Regimenter zu den Sammelplätzen.
