Das große Holzkreuz am Erpeler Ley wurde zum Gedenken an die Opfer der Jahre 1944/45 errichtet, die bei der Verteidigung der berühmten "Brücke von Remagen" ihr Leben lassen mussten. Damals wurde die Eisenbahnbrücke ("Ludendorf-Brücke") schwer beschädigt, stürzte schließlich ein und wurde nie wieder aufgebaut. Von der Aussichtsplattform aus kann man heute noch die übrig gebliebenen Brückentürme sehen.
