Der Herzogstand gilt als einer der Parade-Aussichtsberge der Bayerischen Voralpen, und sein Ruf ist vollauf gerechtfertigt. Ein Besuch auf seinem Gipfel bietet ein Panorama, das in seiner Dramaturgie und Schönheit kaum zu übertreffen ist.

Das zentrale Erlebnis ist der legendäre "Zwei-Seen-Blick". Direkt zu Füßen des Betrachters, fast 900 Meter tiefer, breitet sich der Walchensee mit seinem tiefblauen, an die Karibik erinnernden Wasser aus. Seine fjordartige Gestalt, umrahmt von steilen, bewaldeten Hängen, bietet einen Anblick von erhabener Schönheit. Wendet man den Blick nach Norden, schweift er über das flachere Voralpenland zum weiter entfernten Kochelsee und bei klarer Sicht bis nach München.

Diese einzigartige Perspektive wusste schon König Ludwig II. zu schätzen, der sich hier am Hang ein Königshaus errichten ließ, um sich in die Einsamkeit der Bergwelt zurückzuziehen. Ein kurzer, aber lohnender Spaziergang führt von der Bergstation der Herzogstandbahn zum historischen Gipfelpavillon. Von diesem einstigen Lieblingsplatz des Königs aus entfaltet sich das volle 360-Grad-Panorama, das im Süden die schroffen Gipfel des Karwendel- und Wettersteingebirges und den Alpenhauptkamm umfasst.

Die bequeme Erreichbarkeit durch die Seilbahn in Kombination mit der grandiosen und kontrastreichen Aussicht macht den Herzogstand zu einem unvergesslichen und für jedermann zugänglichen Alpenerlebnis.
