Altpörtel - Old Gate

The Altpörtel, formerly the western main gate of the medieval fortifications of the city, is among the highest (55 m) and most beautiful city gates in Germany.

Construction began in 1230, with the upper tower floor added 300 years later, featuring the late Gothic tracery parapet and the arcade arches of the gallery. The steep roof with the lantern dates from 1708. The city-facing side is richly structured, and the arrow slits on the west side indicate the tower's defensive function.
On the northern side of the Altpörtel passage, an iron clamp is installed. It represents the Speyer standard measure, the 28 cm high so-called Speyer standard shoe, which was the measure of all things for every trader in Speyer. Due to fortunate circumstances, the tower survived the city destruction in 1689 and remained one of the few remnants of the medieval city fortifications.
