The Dordogne Valley, the largest biosphere reserve in France, covering 24,000 km², has been awarded the UNESCO label for its exceptional nature and environment. This is a very select club, of which there are only eleven in the whole of France and a distinction that allows the Vallée to better promote its exceptionally well-prepared territory.

The valley reveals exceptional and grandiose landscapes overlooking the Dordogne. Once impetuous and rebellious at the time of the intrepid navigators that were the barges, the river is today tamed by a gigantic staircase of five large dams.

Here and there, its wild gorges offer breathtaking views, and its architectural and natural heritage are in unison to surprise and enchant you. The Dordogne basin has been classified by UNESCO as a "World Biosphere Reserve" since 2012.

For a long time, the Dordogne was the scene of a fabulous adventure: that of the bargemen of the Haute-Dordogne, lumberjacks, fishermen who descended the gorges of the Dordogne, then the valley towards Aquitaine, the wood necessary for the Bordeaux cooperage.

The barges made only one trip, that of the descent. Upon arrival, the boats were dismantled and sold as firewood. The crews went up on foot to Corrèze or, later, by train.
