Erstmals urkundlich erwähnt, wurde ein Greizer Rathaus im Jahr 1564.
1610 fiel dieses einem Brand zum Opfer und wurde sofort neu errichtet. Den Turm mit der Uhr erhielt das Haus 1641. Das alte Rathaus wurde bei dem großen Stadtband von 1802 vernichtet. Bis in die 1840er Jahre dauerte es bis zu seiner Wiedererrichtung. Das heutige Gebäude im neugotischen Stil, mit seinem markanten viereckigen Turm und den Fialen (gotischen Spitztürmchen), wurde in den Jahren 1840 bis 1842 wieder aufgebaut und 1909 durch einen Anbau, der heute den großen Sitzungssaal und weitere Räume beherbergt, ergänzt.
