Senlis gehört zu dem „Land der Kunst und Geschichte von Senlis bis Ermenonville" und bewahrt ein Kulturerbe, das mit 2.000 Jahren Geschichte verbunden ist.

Die Geschichte der Stadt beginnt, als sie Hauptstadt der keltischen Silvanekter war. Später ließen die Römer sie Augustomagus nennen. Zahlreiche Artefakte erinnern an diese Zeit und können mit Stücken aus unterschiedlichen Epochen sowie Malereien aus dem 17. bis 20. Jh. im Musée d‘Art et d‘Archéologie betrachtet werden.

Im 3. Jh. wurde Senlis zum Militärstützpunkt und umgab sich mit einer Stadtmauer. Reste mit 16 Türmen sowie Reste des römischen Amphitheaters sind erhalten.

Im Frühmittelalter war Senlis Zentrum einer gleichnamigen Grafschaft. Die Schlossruinen stehen heute in einem Park. Der Bau der Kathedrale begann am Ende des 10. Jh.s. Von beachtenswertem Interesse ist die Abtei Saint-Vincent. Sie wurde auf Initiative der Anna von Kyiv, Tochter des Kyiver Großfürsten und Königin von Frankreich, gebaut. Reste der ursprünglichen Gebäude sind schwer zu finden. Heute steht an dieser Stelle ein Gymnasium. Doch die Erinnerung an Anna von Kyiv ist von besonderer Bedeutung für die Stadt.

Public transport

Aus Paris (Bahnhof Paris-Nord) fährt man mit dem Zug nach Creil und dann mit dem Bus nach Senlis.

Directions

Radwanderer sollen besonders vorsichtig sein, da der Verkehr um Paris sehr dicht ist und Kreuzungen gefährlich sein können. Der beste Weg folgt unterschiedlichen Regionalstraßen (RN301, RD84, RD10, RD1017) bis nach Senlis.

Der Autofahrer fährt entweder über die A1 (Paris-Lille), Ausfahrt Senlis (mautpflichtig), oder über die Regionalstraße RN2.

Parking

Stellplätze für Wohnmobile sind in der Stadt nicht vorhanden. Nächste Stellplätze sind östlich der Stadt ca. 20 km in mehreren Campings vorhanden.
