Reims ist die Stadt der Königskrönungen und des Champagners. Die Gegend ist seit frühester Zeit besiedelt.

In römischer Zeit war Civitas Remorum Hauptstadt der Provinz Belgica. Aus dem 3. Jh. sind noch eindrucksvolle Bauwerke zu sehen. Die Porte de Mars ist ein gallo-römischer Triumphbogen und ältestes Steindenkmal der Stadt.

In der Kathedrale Notre-Dame wurden 33 französische Könige gekrönt. Der Bau wurde 1991 als eines der ersten Objekte in die UNESCO Welterbe-Liste aufgenommen.

Ebenfalls Weltkulturerbe ist das Palais du Tau. Hier fanden u.a. die Krönungsbankette statt. Seit 1972 beherbergt das Palais das Musée de l‘Œuvre.

1991 als UNESCO-Weltkulturerbe anerkannt wurde die romanisch-gotische Basilika Saint-Remi. Die ehemalige nebenan stehende Benediktinerabtei beherbergt das Historische Museum.

Das Musée de la Reddition erinnert daran, dass am 7. Mai 1945 im Hauptquartier von General Eisenhower die bedingungslose Kapitulation von Nazi-Deutschland unterzeichnet wurde.

Aber man kann Reims nicht erkunden, ohne die Champagner-Keller zu besichtigen. Sie gehören seit 2015 zum UNESCO-Weltkulturerbe.

Public transport

Mit dem Zug erreicht man Reims mit dem TGV aus Paris-Est nach Reims-Centre oder nach Champagne Ardenne TGV, mit der Regionalbahn aus Château-Thierry. Aus Soissons ist keine direkte Verbindung vorhanden.

Directions

Aus Château-Thierry fahren Radwanderer entlang der RD3 bis Passy-Grigny und dann die RD980 bis Reims. Aus Soissons fährt man am Besten über kleinere Straßen, die parallel zur RN31 verlaufen.

Von Château-Thierry fährt der Autofahrer entweder über die A4 Paris-Metz (mautpflichtig) oder die Regionalstraßen RD1003 bis Verneuil und RD980 ab Verneuil nach Reims. Aus Soissons fährt man am kürzesten auf die RN31 Richtung Reims.

Parking

Stellplätze für Wohnmobile gibt es im Centre International de séjour.
