Die bezirksfreie Stadt Metz, die zur Region Grand Est gehört, entstand auf dem Hügel Sainte-Croix und dem Zitadellenhügel und ist der ursprüngliche Stammsitz der Karolinger.

Gegründet als keltisches Oppidum, wurde Metz zur römischen Stadt. In merowingisch-fränkischer Zeit war Metz Hauptstadt des fränkischen Ostreichs. Das Musée de la Cour d‘Or zeigt u.a. archäologische Sammlungen aus gallo-römischen und mittelalterlichen Zeiten.

Die Kirche Saint-Pierre-aux-Nonnains ist eine der ältesten Kirchen Frankreichs und dient gegenwärtig als Saal für Ausstellungen und Konzerte. Aus dem Mittelalter sind Teile der Stadtmauer, das Porte des Allemands, Kirchen und Klöster, u.a. die Kathedrale Saint-Etienne erhalten. Im 17. Jh. wurde die Festung wesentlich vergrößert.

Heute umfasst der Stadtkern große restaurierte Plätze wie den mittelalterlichen Platz Saint-Louis, den ehemaligen Change-Platz im italienischen Stil und den Armes-Platz. Für das 18. Jh. ist das elegante Inselviertel charakteristisch.

Die moderne Stadt entfaltet sich im Stadtviertel Amphithéâtre und im Seille-Park mit dem Museum Centre Pompidou-Metz.

Mit dem Zug erreicht man Metz mit dem TGV aus Paris-Est oder Reims nach Gare de Metz oder nach Lorraine TGV.
