The synagogue is located in the centre of the village of Lengnau. Since the 17th century, the two villages of Lengnau and Endingen have been home to people of the Jewish faith who were denied the freedom to settle in the rest of Switzerland.
Architect Ferdinand Stadler chose the round arch style for the building, a variation of the neo-Romanesque style that he had adopted from his teacher Heinrich Hübsch. The building has a rectangular floor plan and a flat pitched gable roof. The entrance façade has a pilaster strip structure in a strong dark old rose colour.
The main portal is located in the protruding, raised centre risalit, flanked by the two entrances for the women. A round arch connects the main portal with the two-part centre window, in the apex of which a clock was subsequently added. Further narrow arched openings are located above the side doors. The pediment of the centre risalit is crowned by a stone tablet of the law.
The wall and ceiling paintings show ornaments and stylised plant motifs. Dark wickerwork bands separate the strictly symmetrical ceiling panels from each other at the height of the pairs of pillars. Overall, the paintings aim to achieve the most three-dimensional effect possible. The special feature of the Lengnau decorative painting is the ochre tones, which imitate the material qualities of brass, copper and gold (smoothness, hardness, lustre, outlines). This creates the impression of goldsmith's work.
