Around 1850, the Jewish community of Endingen numbered around 1,000 people and was therefore slightly larger than the Christian population. Despite this, the synagogue, the largest building in the old village, is not located in a prominent place, but in a back alley, the "Hinterstieg". The reason is simple: the first synagogue, built in 1764, was already located here and the growing Jewish population urgently required more space. The Baden architect Caspar Joseph Jeuch designed an austere, classicist façade and decorated the windows with Moorish-style horseshoe arches. The decorative painting inside complements the Moorish architectural elements. With this Arabic-Islamic flair, the architect and the Zurich decorative painter Heinrich Wettstein allude to the oriental roots of Judaism. The Moorish style had previously been used in German synagogue construction. The delicate balustrade grille, which concealed the women on the three-sided gallery, is particularly decorative. The men, on the other hand, prayed on the ground floor. They kept their prayer shawls and prayer belts in the lecterns. The synagogue has been a cantonal listed building since 1963. The exterior was restored in 1986 and the interior in 1997/98.
