The Wildhauser Schafberg, or "Wildhuser Schofberg" in Swiss German dialect, rises majestically in the upper Toggenburg and is one of the most prominent peaks of the imposing Alpstein. This impressive mountain lies to the south-east of the famous Säntis and extends over the area of the once independent municipality of Wildhaus, which has been part of the political municipality of Wildhaus-Alt St. Johann since 2010. With an impressive height of 2373 metres above sea level, it is one of the most imposing mountains in this region and takes third place on the list of the highest peaks in Alpstein.
The ascent of the Wildhauser Schafberg is via a marked mountain trail, which is marked with white-red-white markings. This trail leads adventurers and mountain lovers to this impressive peak, but the last section of the ascent requires some courage and skill. Here, a steep gully must be overcome, which is secured with a wire rope. The reward for these efforts, however, is a view that is second to none.
The Wildhauser Schafberg is often referred to as the landmark of Upper Toggenburg, as it is the only mountain visible from almost any point in the valley floor. The panoramic view from its summit is simply breathtaking. It stretches over the Rätikon mountains, the majestic Silvretta group, the impressive Grisons Alps and the Glarus Alps all the way to the striking Rigi, which looms majestically on the horizon.
The Wildhauser Schafberg combines the fascinating beauty of the Swiss mountain landscape and the opportunity to experience nature in its purest form. Its silhouette on the horizon is not only a symbol of Upper Toggenburg, but also a magnet for adventurers and nature lovers who want to experience the majestic splendour of the Alps in all their glory.
