Die markanten Nordwände der Drei Zinnen im Hochpustertal sind wahrscheinlich die bekannteste Ansicht der Dolomiten.

Seit der Erstbesteigung der Großen Zinne mit ihren knapp 3000 m Höhe sind die Drei Zinnen Ausgangspunkt vieler Entwicklungen im Bergsport, begehrtes Ziel zahlreicher Alpinisten und gleichzeitig größte Attraktion der Dolomiten.
Im Jahre 1869 bestiegen der einheimische Führer Franz Innerkofler zusammen mit Peter Salcher und dem bekannten Wiener Alpinisten Paul Grohmann über den heutigen Normalweg in nur drei Stunden die Spitze der Großen Zinne. Seit diesem Zeitpunkt waren die Drei Zinnen immer wieder Schauplatz spektakulärer Leistungen im Fels.

Unterbrochen von den Kriegshandlungen des Ersten Weltkrieges, begann erst in den Dreißiger Jahren die weitere Erschließung, diesmal über die extrem anspruchsvollen Nordwände mit für damalige Verhältnisse nicht für möglich gehaltenen Schwierigkeitsgraden. In der Folge wurden neue, direkte Routen erschlossen und zahlreiche, auch fragwürdige Rekorde aufgestellt.

Die leichte Erreichbarkeit des Gebirgsmassivs über eine asphaltierte Mautstraße bis hoch zum Schutzhaus Auronzo führt vor allem im Juli und August zu völlig überlaufenen Wegen und zeigt damit die Grenzen des Tourismus in den Dolomiten auf. In der Hochsaison ergeben sich auf den sehr leichten und breiten Wanderwegen um die Zinnen regelrechte Staus.

Die traumhaft schöne Landschaft der Sextner Dolomiten, mit den Drei Zinnen als Höhepunkt, rechtfertigt aber einen Besuch allemal, nur der Zeitpunkt sollte sorgfältig gewählt werden.
