The nature of Tajan Mountain is unique because the mountain itself consists of limestone rock dating back to Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous periods which produced many karst phenomena, particularly caves in the Suha valley.
The majority of forest communities include beech and silver fir with Norway spruce, pure beech forest, oak-hornbeam forests and black pine forests, with typical vegetation of peridotite and serpentinite soils growing on the northern hillsides of Tajan.
Reported endemic species are Lilium bosniacum (G. Beck) G. Beck Fritch (Bosnian lily), and Euphorbia gregersenii K .Maly (Gregersen's smallflower hairy willowherb) growing on the outskirts of Tajan.
Animal species inhabiting the park are the brown bear, wolf, wild boar, European roe deer, rabbit, pine marten, squirrel, skunk, weasel, bank vole, grouse, hazel grouse, numerous reptiles and amphibians.
The greater Tajan area, covering 50 km2, was designated a protected area in 2008 under the category of Natural Monument.
Price:
An entrance fee is charged for Srednja Cliff Cave, Lukina Cave and Mašica Lake.
Directions
If you take the motorway from Sarajevo to Kakanj (50 km distance), make turn to regional road towards Ponijeri site. Alternatively, take the motorway to Zenica/Doboj. After Zenica, continue for around 30 km until you reach Zavidovići. Continue for 16 km all the way to Kamenica which is located on the northern edge of the Tajan Park.
