At 1051 metres, the highest peak in Fichtelgebirge is also the highest elevation in Franconia and northern Bavaria.
A distinctive feature is the telecommunications tower, a reminder of the Cold War era when the mountain was a restricted military area. Schneeberg has been freely accessible again since 1993. The summit area is characterized by several granite bluffs and the lookout tower "Backfele".
