Der Ponten besteht aus einem vorgelagerten Hauptgipfel und einem ausgesetzten Nebengipfel mit Gipfelkreuz. Diese sind über eine kleine, felsige Scharte miteinander verbunden. Der Ponten bietet einen scheinbar grenzenlosen Rundumblick über die Allgäuer Alpen, die markanten Tannheimer Berggipfel, die umliegenden Täler sowie die zum Greifen nahen Gipfel Bscheißer, Gaishorn und Rauhhorn.
Auf den Ponten führen gut markierte Wege, wobei der letzte Anstieg zum Gipfel felsig und leicht ausgesetzt ist und daher etwas Trittsicherheit erfordert. Häufig wird der Ponten gemeinsam mit dem benachbarten Bschießer (2000 m) überschritten.
