Pen y Fan is the highest and most famous peak in South Wales and part of the Brecon Beacons mountain range in the national park of the same name.
The name is Welsh and is usually translated as "the top of the mountain". The mountain is made of Old Red sandstone and is used for training by British special forces in addition to hikers and participants in the Pen y Fan run. The National Trust organisation is working to stop the progressive erosion of the terrain. Next to Pen y Fan is the mountain Corn Du. On the way to the top of Pen y Fan is the Tommy Jones Obelisk in memory of the five-year-old boy who died here in 1900 and got lost in the area. The obelisk helps hikers find their way around  From the top of Pen y Fan you can enjoy a magnificent panoramic view of the whole Brecon Beacons National Park. There is a beautiful circular walk from the Pont ar Daf car park linking the two peaks of Corn Du and Pen y Fan.
