The Hochkogel towers above the surrounding peaks of the Pinzgauer Grasberge and is one of the highest peaks in the region at an altitude of 2,249 metres.

A marked hiking trail leads over the summit of the Hochkogel. To the east, it merges with the Pinzgauer Spaziergang via the Klinglertörl, leading towards Schmittenhöhe. To the west, the trail passes over several other peaks, such as Hochsaalbachkogel, Medalkogel, Sonnberg (Kitzbühel Alps), Bärensteigkopf, and Lamperbichlkogel, before joining the Pinzgauer Spaziergang again at Sommertor. This trail continues in that direction until reaching the Sintersbachscharte on the border with Tyrol.
