Der Grand Ballon ist im Winter aufgrund seiner beachtlichen Schneehöhen beliebt bei Skifahrern und Langläufern, im Sommer führen zahlreiche Wanderungen rund um den Gipfel. Auch eine Sommerrodelbahn ist vorhanden. Vom Grand Ballon bietet sich ein beeindruckender Ausblick über Rheinebene, Schwarzwald und Jura bis hin zu den Alpen. Auf dem Gipfel befinden sich eine Radarstation mit Aussichtsplattform sowie ein Denkmal für die Gebirgsjäger im Ersten Weltkrieg.
Der Große Belchen ist Bestandteil des sogenannten „Belchen-Systems“, das angeblich schon keltische Druiden zur Bestimmung der Jahreszeiten genutzt haben. Der Name „Belchen“, den im Dreiländereck Deutschland – Frankreich – Schweiz gleich fünf Berge tragen, soll demzufolge von Belenus, dem keltischen Gott des Lichtes, abgeleitet sein. Am ersten Mai, dem Feiertag Beltane geht die Sonne vom Elsässer Belchen aus gesehen direkt über dem Großen Belchen auf. Dieser Feiertag war Belenus gewidmet und markierte für die Kelten den Jahresanfang und Sommerbeginn.
