Der Gimpel ist zusammen mit der Roten Flüh das markante Gesicht der Berge rund um das Tannheimer Tal.

Der aus Wettersteinkalk bestehende Gipfel ist ein beliebter Kletterberg. Die Bezwingung des Westgrats ist – je nach Routenführung – der Schwierigkeit UIAA III+ bis UIAA IX− zuzuordnen. Selbst der Normalweg durch die Südwand und über den Ostgrat ist nur von erfahrenen Bergsteigern begehbar (UIAA II+).

Der Name des Berges stammt von der Gimpelalpe, die in einer Senke unterhalb des Gipfels liegt. Ihr Name lässt sich wiederum auf das keltische „comba“ zurückführen, was soviel wie „Mulde“ bedeutet.
