The Biberkopf towers majestically in the Alps, an imposing peak that lies on the border between Germany and Austria. At an altitude of 2599 metres, it towers proudly in the main ridge of the Allgäu Alps, right where Bavaria and Tyrol meet.
Located just 15.5 kilometres south-southwest of Oberstdorf and only 2.5 kilometres east of the Schrofenpass (as the crow flies), the Biberkopf captivates hikers and mountaineers alike.
Described as the southernmost point in Bavaria or even Germany, although the Haldenwanger Eck lies further west, the Biberkopf is not only a geographical boundary, but also a symbol of closeness to nature and a thirst for adventure. Marked trails lead from the Rappenseehütte and Lechleiten near Warth to the summit, but not without challenges. Steep rock and scree sections require surefootedness and courage, while wire ropes and climbing aids enable less experienced hikers to make the ascent.
The history of the Biberkopf is characterised by a pioneering spirit and discoveries. Hermann Grosselfinger, an Allgäu alpinist, conquered the south face of the summit in 1922, opening up new perspectives for the mountaineering world. The summit cross, erected from wood in 1959 by the Obergünzburg branch of the Allgäu-Kempten section of the DAV, symbolises the belief in the power of nature and the community of mountain lovers.
From a geological point of view, the Biberkopf reveals its beauty and uniqueness. Its summit body consists of intensely folded dolomite resting on marl. This geological diversity is reflected in the flora that surrounds the mountain. While vegetation is sparse on the pure dolomite, life flourishes in full splendour in the marl layers.
The Biberkopf is not just a mountain, but an experience that inspires the senses and touches the soul. With its imposing shape and history, it combines the beauty of nature with the challenge of adventure, inviting everyone to climb its peaks and discover its secrets.
