Wedekindplatz

Wedekindplatz is the heart of the flower power era in Munich. Here was where life took place. Surrounded by many bars, cabaret stages, jazz clubs and small theatres, young people of Munich gathered here. In the warmer days you can still observe street musicians playing their songs. This was probably also the trigger for the "Schwabing riots" in 1962, which started at Wedekindplatz. In June 1962 there was a dispute between residents and young people who had gathered to listen to a street band. It came to an action of 450 officials against 10.000 participants in 4 days. To this day, however, no one is quite clear why and how this historic demonstration took place.
