Vittorio Veneto Square

 The square of Saturnia is one of those rare places where you can still feel the vibrations of an ancient past. Rich green is surrounded by chic bars and restaurants, and the square is a veritable outdoor museum. Below the current travertine pavement, next to the fountain and in front of Via Ciacci, lurks the meeting of the two main roads: 'Il Cardo' and 'Il decumanu massimi', both dating from the time of from the Roman colonies. In front of the restaurant "I due cippi", hidden from the current ground level are Roman baths notmfed by sulphurous waters, as proven by the discovery of the calidarium, tepidarium and frigidarium. The floor of this structure was a mosaic in black and white tiles where you can still make out part of a fish and a seahorse. Near the same restaurant are two beautiful stones with Latin engravings: two important testimonies concerning public figures regarding the travertine pillars that supported the statue of Didio Saturnino, commander of the first centurion. Didio Saturnino was awarded military honors (armillae and torques) in the war against the Parthians and the Germanic war and received the golden civic crown and silver pole by Antoninus and Severus. The other pillar held the statue of Sesto Mecio Marcello, dedicated to him by Pagi Lucreti, the inhabitants of a town which was under the control of Saturnia. Duoviro of Saturnia, superintendent of the timetable and food and also editor of Pagus Lucretius, was a benefactor.

 FONTANA

The soothing fountain in the center of the square dates back to 1913 the Fiora Aqueduct was opened, bringing water to the entire municipal area.

PUBLIC GARDENS

The Saturnia public gardens are a veritable outdoor museum: sculptures, Late Republican and Imperial Latin inscriptions invoking the hand of the Gods. These testimonies have been recovered over the years in the surrounding countryside and now cannot return to their original location.

 Archaeological excavations 

at the back of the garden there is an empty area which has been the site of archaeological investigations, recovering traces of Etruscan civilization from the 4 th century BC, the Roman Era, Medieval and Renaissance periods. This site also contains the ruins of the church of San Biagio.
