Der Untere Marktplatz wurde im Jahr 1999 anlässlich des 400jährigen Stadtjubiläums neu gestaltet. Auf einer schiefen Fläche wurden 50 Wasserfontänen angelegt, sie erinnern an den Slogan des Jubiläums: "Renaissance und Lebensfreuden". Sehenswert ist die winkelhakenförmige Stadtkirche, der Barbenbrunnen, der Gerechtigkeitsbrunnen, der Mammutbaum und der seltene Urweltmammutbaum. Auch das Kurbähnle startet hier von Mai bis Mitte Oktober seine Rundfahrten hoch auf den Kienberg (Haltestelle am Kinderspielplatz nahe der Stadtkirche).
Unter den Arkaden rund um den größten Marktplatz Deutschlands laden zahlreiche Geschäfte, Restaurants und Cafés zum Bummeln und Verweilen ein.
