One of the most important squares in the city centre. The square was originally laid out as the Place Impuissance during the Empire under Napoleon III.
The most prominent structure on the Place de la République is the imposing Palais du Rhin, a magnificent neoclassical building that once served as a palace for the German Emperor Wilhelm II when Alsace was part of the German Empire. Today, the Palais du Rhin houses the Ministry of Culture and Communication.
The square itself is lined with impressive avenues and bäumes and offers a picturesque view of the Palais du Rhin.
