On the eastern side of the square, there is a roadway connecting Rimsky-Korsakov Avenue with the Griboedov Canal Embankment and further to Sadovaya Street (after which it continues as Nikolsky Lane).
In the center of the square is the Nikolo-Bogoyavlensky Maritime Cathedral, built between 1753—1762 according to the design of S. I. Chevakinsky.
A significant part of the square is occupied by Nikolsky Garden.
