Mitata Square in Frydi was a festival hub, with dancing in its three cafes. The church of Agios Georgios, with Byzantine frescoes, suffered severe damage from the 2006 earthquake.
In the past, it was called to frydi (the cliff) and there were three cafes next to each other. On February 2, during the festival, there was dancing in all three cafes. Many festivals took place and ended before dark because there was no electricity. In the ravine, the sounds from the festivals were otherworldly. During Carnival, Mitata square was celebrated. The church of Agios Georgios, located on the square, is Byzantine in style and features significant frescoes. It suffered severe damage from the large earthquake on January 8 2006, resulting in the collapse and severe damage to both bell towers. The bell towers had been built in a different phase from the rest of the structure, which caused their separation and disconnection due to the seismic wave. In addition cracks and through fractures were created in the masonry. The church itself, which had been constructed of porous stone with simple lime mortar (without a reinforced concrete frame), exhibited large vertical and diagonal cracks. Falls of marble on the church's iconostasis, severe displacements, and signs of strong horizontal displacement, reflecting the epicenter of the earthquake, were also observed.
