From the foot of Mount Civetta it runs through the valley and reaches Longarone by flowing through the deep gorge called Canal del Maè, and flows into the Piave.
In the past, Maè played a decisive role in the history of the Zoldani, who used it to transport timber to the Republic of Venice. It also served to feed the numerous forges that made the iron-working activity an important source of livelihood in the past until the arrival of industrialization which determined the economic decline of the valley and pushed the population towards emigration.
