Die Länge des Flusses beträgt 179 Kilometer und führt von der Quelle im Waldgebiet der Luchsenburg über Brandenburg nach Sachsen-Anhalt, wo er bei Elster in die Elbe mündet. An der Quelle der Schwarzen Elster startet der Schwarze-Elster-Radweg, der dem Flusslauf über Wiesen, Wälder und teilweise direkt auf dem Deich entlang folgt.
Die Schwarze-Elster-Quelle ist eine Station der Naturerlebnisroute der Westlausitz.
