Der Partnachursprung ist eine der größten Karstquellen der Bayerischen Alpen. Das Zugspitzplatt mit seinen umgebenden Gipfeln stellt das Einzugsgebiet der Quelle dar.
Das Einzugsgebiet des Partnachursprungs ist Deutschlands höchstgelegenes Karstgebiet und liegt im Wettersteinkalk und -dolomit. Mit Hilfe von Markierungsarbeiten des LfU konnte nachgewiesen werden, dass das gesamte Zugspitzplatt ein in sich abgeschlossenes Einzugsgebiet mit nur diesem einen Quellaustritt darstellt und sehr schnell auf Niederschlag und Schmelzwasserabfluss reagiert.
Die Quelle liefert im langjährigen Durchschnitt etwa 1.500 Liter Wasser pro Sekunde, an regenreichen Tagen sogar bis 9.000 Liter pro Sekunde!
Der Partnachursprung ist eines von über 3.400 Geotopen im "Geotopkataster Bayern", der seit etwa 1985 zunächst vom Bayerischen Geologischen Landesamt aufgebaut und jetzt vom Bayerischen Landesamt für Umwelt (LfU) weitergeführt wird.
Der Partnachursprung ist außerdem Haltepunkt 8 des Geomorphologischen Lehrpfads am Fuße der Zugspitze.
