Její počátky spadají do prvních desetiletí 13. století, do doby vlády českého krále Přemysla Otakara I. a jeho nástupců. V písemných pramenech je hrad uváděn pod českým názvem Dowina, Diewiczky, později Dívčí hrady. Po kolonizaci kraje německým obyvatelstvem ve 13. století se objevuje německé jméno Maidberk nebo Maidenburg.
Současná podoba torza hradního komplexu je v podstatě gotická ze 14. století s pozdějšími stavebními úpravami, které zde proběhly v 16. a 17. století. Hradní zřícenina je dnes tvořena zaobleným nepravidelným obdélníkem o délce 65 m a šířce 20 m.
