Inside, one can distinguish the head of the temple and remains of the ceiling belonging to the chancel. There is a tall building with an irregular polygonal plan within the walled boundaries. It is most likely that the Tower of Ladeia was just next to this old building.
The original tower protected ‘Ladeia’ – a strip of unpopulated land that was a kind of movable border, dominated by the Moors and by the Christians alternatively. The Tower of Ladeia was very important in the military defensive strategies to defend Ladeia, especially significant during the Christian Reconquest when defending Coimbra was the major priority.
This tower was also used to protect a source of water nearby.
To the north of the Alvorge parish seat, you'll find the ruins of a building dating back to the 15th century, which was part of Quinta da Ladeia.Despite the advanced state of ruin, you can still see the body of the Chapel of Our Lady of the Pillar (said to have been built in 1693) and the interconnection of some of the living spaces. Also clearly visible is a wide staircase with two opposing sections that converge on a landing to access the chapel. The frontispiece bears the Figueiredo Carneiro coat of arms.
Inside, we can see the head of the church and traces of the chancel roof. In the background, we come across a tall building with an irregular polygonal plan, which stands in the walled area. Possibly next to this old building was a tower with the same name.
The original tower protected the Ladeia - a strip of unpopulated land that acted as a kind of shifting border: sometimes it belonged to the Moors, sometimes to the Christians. The Ladeia Tower was an important piece of military equipment for the defense of this region, particularly relevant in the context of the Christian Reconquest, when the defense of the city of Coimbra was at stake.
In addition to its defensive purposes, the Ladeia Tower also protected the water source that springs from it.
