חורבת סמארה כוללת מבנה השוכן על גבעה בגובה של 15 מטר מעל פני הים, צפונית לנחל אלכסנדר ולחופית. צורתו של המבנה כשל מלבן ובו שלושה חדרים מחוברים זה לזה. הוא נתמך בשלוש קשתות חיצוניות המעגנות את קירותיו אל סלע הכורכר.
המבנה הוקם בסוף המאה ה-19 על ידי עבדאללה סמארה, תושב טול כרם שהחזיק באדמות האזור, ושימש אותו לתצפית עליהן.
מאוחר יותר השמיש השלטון העות'מאני את המבנה בתור תחנה לגביית מכס על האבטיחים שגודלו בעמק חפר, ויוצאו לרחבי האימפריה.
כיום שוכנת החרבה בתחומי הגן הלאומי נחל אלכסנדר, והיא משמשת את המטיילים במקום לצורך תצפית על האזור. דרומית-מערבית למבנה נחשפו שרידיה של חווה חקלאית ובה רצפת פסיפס מהתקופה הרומית המאוחרת וגתות יין מהתקופה הביזנטית. עוד נמצאו במקום מערות קבורה שנחצבו בסלע הכורכר. שביל ישראל העובר לאורך הנחל מעפיל אל המבנה.
