The fortress was first mentioned more than 800 years ago as “Veste Planckenberg”.

It was administered by the Reeves of Gera for a time as an imperial fiefdom of the Hohenstaufen lords. The strategically important fortress then changed owners several times during the following centuries. Its exposed location on the border between Thuringia and Bavaria makes the fortress an attractive destination for outings. The so-called hiking hub, where important national hiking routes meet, is located close to it.
