In landschaftlich reizvoller Lage am Westabhang des Schobers liegt auf einem Felsen die Burgruine Wartenfels.
Die Burg wurden im Jahre 1259 errichtet. Der Erzbischof richtete auf Wartenfels ein Pflegegericht ein, das über das ganze Gebiet von Thalgau, Faistenau, Fuschl und Abersee verfügte. Ab 1564, mit dem Bau eines Gerichtsgebäudes in Thalgau, war die Burg dem Verfall preisgegeben. Durch die Bauarbeiten, die 1981 begannen, erhielt der Baukörper so viel Substanz, dass er nun auch vom Tal weithin sichtbar ist. Die übrigen Mauerzüge wurden ausgebessert und die Mauerkronen dauerhaft befestigt, sodass die Ruine heute weitgehend gut erhalten ist.

Sie fahren auf der Bundesstrasse zwischen Thalgau und Fuschl. Am Höchsten Punkt zweigen Sie beim Wegweiser "Wartenfels" ab und folgem dem Straßenverlauf bis Sie anstehen.
