The Schmidtburg was the ancestral seat of the counts in the Nahegau and up to the beginning of the 14th century in the possession of the counts. After the acquisition of the castle by Archbishop Balduin of Trier in 1324, the fortress was extended and became a military base for the territorial policy of the Electorate of Trier.
When French pioneers blew up the site during reunification wars in 1688, the Schmidtburg ultimately lost its military significance. Until the end of the 18th century, the upper castle remained the administrative seat for the Electorate of Trier properties in the Hunsrück region. Only after extensive excavation and redevelopment measures in the 1970/80s did the size of the site, which had been almost completely reclaimed by nature, become apparent again.
You can also visit it as a station on the Traumschleife 'Hahnenbachtal'.
