Die Burg Dorneck liegt auf einer Felsrippe oberhalb von Dornach im Kanton Solothurn.

Die Burg Dorneck war einst ein bedeutendes militärisches Bollwerk. Die erste Burganlage entstand im 11. Jahrhundert und gehörte ursprünglich den Freien von Pfeffingen, später den Grafen von Saugern und dann den Grafen von Tierstein, die im 13. Jahrhundert Teile des heute sichtbaren Komplexes errichteten.

Trotz Beschädigungen durch das Basler Erdbeben 1356 wurde die Burg wieder instand gesetzt und erweitert. 1360 ging sie in den Besitz der Habsburger über, blieb jedoch als Lehen beim Grafen von Tierstein. Ab 1394 war sie verpfändet an den Basler Bürger Henmann von Efringen, dessen Familie sie lange besaß. Später kam es zu weiteren Eigentümerwechseln und Ausbauarbeiten, u.a. mit der Erweiterung um die Vorburg.

1485 kaufte die Stadt Solothurn die stark beschädigte Burg und machte sie zu einer strategischen Festung im Streit mit Basel. 1499 wurde sie während des Schwabenkriegs belagert, aber erfolgreich von den Eidgenossen verteidigt. Danach wurde sie weiter ausgebaut und blieb bis 1798 ein wichtiger militärischer Standort mit Sitz von rund 60 Landvögten.

Mit dem Einfall der Franzosen 1798 endete die militärische Nutzung: Die Burg wurde stark beschädigt, geplündert und später als Steinbruch verwendet. 1902 wurde sie dem Kanton Solothurn geschenkt, und ab 1970 übernahm die kantonale Denkmalpflege die Erhaltung der Anlage.

Heute ist die beeindruckende Ruine mit Bergfried, Palas, Kapellenturm, Ringmauer und Bollwerken ein beliebtes Wanderziel.
