Die Höhenburg liegt über dem gleichnamigen westlichen Ortsteil Bad Dürkheim-Hardenburg auf einer 200 m langen Bergnase rechts über dem Tal der Isenach, dessen Öffnung zur Rheinebene sie früher kontrollierte. Die Anfahrt erfolgt über die Bundesstraße 37 (Bad Dürkheim–Kaiserslautern) und ist ausgeschildert.

Die Hardenburg ist eine der größten und eindruckvollsten Burganlagen der Pfalz. Die Ausmaße dieser mächtigen Befestigungsanlage betragen etwa 180 x 90 Meter.

Gründer der Hardenburg waren Anfang des 13. Jahrhunderts die Grafen von Leiningen. Als Schutzvögte des nahegelegenen Kloster Limburg bauten die Grafen ohne Erlaubnis der Abtei die Burg auf dessen Grund und Boden. Erst 1249 wurden die Streitigkeiten um den Grundbesitz beendet.

1317 enstand durch eine Erbteilung die Linie "Leiningen-Hardenburg". Die streitsüchtigen Grafen entschlossen sich um das Jahr 1500 die Burg zu einer Festung auszubauen.

Die Festungsbaumeister "Hans Jacob von Ettlingen" und "Caspar Weitz" begannen mit dem Bau der monumentalen Verteidigungsanlagen. Etwa 100 Jahre dauerte es, bis die Hardenburg in vollem Glanz erschien.

Von der "alten Burg" sind nur noch geringe Mauerreste auf der Oberburg erhalten.

Den Dreißigjährigen Krieg überstand die mächtige Festung schadlos. In dieser schrecklichen Zeit war die Burg Zufluchtsort

der Bevölkerung der umliegenden Orte.

Während des Pfälzischen Erbfolgekrieg wurde die Hardenburg  durch französische Truppen besetzt und nur leicht beschädigt.

Durch die Erfindung moderner Feuerwaffen wurde die Festung bedeutungslos. Die Burg wurde von den Leininger Grafen als

Residenzschloß ausgebaut.

Am 29.03.1794 überfielen Französiche Revolutionstruppen die Burg und brannten sie mitsamt der kostbaren Einrichtung nieder.

Von nun an zerfiel die prächtige Hardenburg zur Ruine.

1970 begannen umfangreiche Restaurierungsarbeiten die noch lange nicht abgeschlossen sind.
