Am Nordhang des Reichensteiner Bergs gelegen, wird die Burg erstmals 1239 als "Castrum Birseke superior" urkundlich erwähnt. Einst im Besitz des elsässischen Klosters Niedermünster ging sie im gleichen Jahr durch Kauf an den Bischof von Basel über. Nach 1245 gelangte die Birseckburg als Burglehen an die Familie Reich und erhält nach ihr um 1250 ihren neuen Namen "Burg Reichenstein". Die Familie Reich verdankte ihren Namen ihrem Reichtum.Im 17. Jh. zerfiel die Burg endgültig, blieb jedoch im Besitz der Familie Reich, welche sie erst 1813 mitsamt Waldungen dem Basler Seidenfabrikanten Johann Forcat verkaufte.Nach mehrfachem Besitzerwechsel erwarb 1932 der damalige Ciba-Direktor Dr. J. Brodbeck die Burgruine samt Wald. Er liess die Burg nach Plänen des bekannten Burgenforschers und Architekten Eugen Probst aus Zürich als Sommersitz wieder aufbauen, wobei man sich auf die Rekonstruktion des Wehrturms beschränkte. 1938 richtete Dr. J. Brodbeck eine Familienstiftung ein, die 1972 in eine öffentlich-rechtliche Stiftung umgewandelt wurde. Seitdem dient die Burg der heutigen Nutzung.
Die Burg kann mit Bewirtung durch ein Catering reserviert werden.

Am unteren Rande der Burg befindet sich der sogenannte Rehliplatz. Dieser Platz ist ein beliebter Ort zum Picknicken, auch eine Feuerstelle ist vorhanden.
