Die Burg, die keltische Ursprünge hat, wurde im 12. Jahrhundert vom Geschlecht der Sponheimer erworben. Die Ruinen einer Bergstadt, die im 30-jährigen Krieg wüst fiel, und wegen schlechter Standortbedingungen nie wieder aufgebaut wurde, sind im Umfeld der Burg noch zu sehen.Und auch der so genannte Wackelstein ist nicht weit entfernt.
