Der Bahnhof Schongau befindet sich östlich der Schongauer Innenstadt, etwa 250 Meter vom Stadtzentrum entfernt. Das Empfangsgebäude steht westlich der Gleise und hat die Adresse Bahnhofstraße 17. [1] Das Bahnhofsareal wird westlich von der Bahnhofstraße und der Hermann-Ranz-Straße und östlich von der Perlachstraße und dem Helgolandweg begrenzt. Nördlich des Bahnhofs erstreckt sich ein Gewerbegebiet, östlich und westlich der Gleise liegen Wohngebiete. An der südlichen Bahnhofsausfahrt überqueren die Staatsstraße 2014 und die Bahnhofstraße mit Bahnübergängen das Streckengleis. Südlich des Bahnhofs führt die Strecke auf einer Brücke über den Lech.
