The ponds around Walkenried were built in the middle ages by monks from the Cistercian Monastery. They were fish ponds. Fish were an important part of the monks' diet.
It is said that the monks constructed 365 ponds – one for each day of the year. In Walkenried there are still 10 ponds that were used by the monks. The largest pond is the Priorteich. The dam is 150 m long and 4 m high. The pond is in the middle of a forest with ancient beech trees. In summer it is a great place for a swim!
Later, the Upper Harz miners built ponds and ditches similar to those built by the monks. The water was needed for the many water wheels in the mines. The ore extracted underground had to be hoisted to the surface. And water that had seeped into the mines had to be pumped out. The miners used water power for this.
Die Upper Harz Water Management System is today a part of the UNESCO World Heritage in the Harz. And it started with the ideas of the monks from Walkenried.
