Die erste urkundliche Erwähnung 923 als Mutterkirche des Lungaus („ecclesia ad lungouve“) bezieht sich wahrscheinlich auf die St. Laurentius-Kirche im Ort Althofen unterhalb der Anhöhe von Mariapfarr. Konrad aus dem Geschlecht der Herren von Pfarr überließ 1217 vor seinem Zug ins Heilige Land sein Gehöft samt Kapelle der Kirche. Die begünstigte Lage seines Besitzes auf der Anhöhe führte dazu, dass aus Gehöft und Kapelle sowohl Pfarrhof als auch Kirche entstanden, die in mehreren Bauphasen immer wieder erweitert wurden. So wurde und wird noch immer das Ortsbild von Mariapfarr von Kirche und Pfarrhof geprägt.

Große Bedeutung hatte jahrhundertelang die Marien-Wallfahrt, die nun wiederbelebt wird. Der neu adaptierte Pfarrsaal erhielt den Namen „Joseph Mohr-Saal“. Joseph Mohr schrieb hier in Mariapfarr, aus dem auch seine Vorfahren stammten, im Jahr 1816 als Hilfspriester den Text für das „Stille-Nacht“ Lied.
