On February 16, 1722, the government of the Palatinate-Zweibrücken granted Philipp Nikolaus Leuchsenring, originally from Neustadt, the privilege to operate a pharmacy in Kandel. Since that time, the profession of pharmacist has been practiced in this property. Leuchsenring was married to Maria Katharina Jung, the daughter of the "Swan Innkeeper," with whom he had eleven children. The youngest was Franz Michael Leuchsenring, who was born in this building on April 13, 1746. This Kandel boy became well-known as a tutor to princes at the court of Hesse-Darmstadt and as a teacher of the later King of Prussia, Friedrich Wilhelm III. He mingled with Goethe, Herder, Arnim, Lessing, and other great intellectuals. He also made a name for himself as the editor of the widely recognized journal "Journale de Lecture." His collaborators included Diderot and Voltaire, among others. In Paris, where he went in 1792 as an admirer of the French Revolution and made his living as a language teacher, Leuchsenring passed away in 1827.
