The "Verschönerungsdeputation" (beautification deputation) of the city of Görlitz, a citizens' advisory body, was already concerned with the grounds of the Obermühlberge, as the area of the vineyard was called 200 years ago, in 1834. It suggested landscaping the areas above the Obermühle, as the promenade, a double-row avenue, had led from today's Curiestraße to the roundabout in front of the blockhouse, which was only built on the highest point of the Obermühlberge in 1855.
From year to year, depending on the financial possibilities of the city, more areas were acquired, landscaped and made accessible by stairways and paths. While the rocky slopes facing the Neisse were originally almost bare, a varied deciduous forest with a few interspersed conifers developed over the years. A highlight in the vineyards is the railway viaduct, which has spanned the Neisse valley with 31 pillars since 1847. In 1890, the "Weinberghaus" restaurant with its tower was opened and was a popular attraction for the people of Görlitz and their guests for almost 100 years. At present, the restaurant and tower are not open to the public. Not far away, the park railway, a scaled-down replica of the "Adler" locomotive that ran on the first German railway line from Nuremberg to Fürth, runs an approx. 800 m long circuit. A large playground offers variety for children of all ages. A special feature near the park railway is the monument to the breed poultry breeder Robert Oettel, the founder of the first "Hühnerologischer Verein" in Germany. There was a barge station at the Obermühle until 1945, when the Neisse was declared a border river. The tradition of paddling on the Neisse was continued in 2000 with the reconstruction of the "gondola harbour", so that today the vineyard slopes/ Obermühlberge can once again be experienced from the water. The Inselweg, part of the long-distance hiking trail "German Unity" - Görlitz - Aachen (blue dot), runs along the banks of the Neisse. From here, you can easily explore the vineyards and reach the "Berggarten", the "Friedenshöhe" and the "Schellergrund".
